Tom Lubbe, the proprietor and winemaker born in South Africa and raised in New Zealand established Domaine Matassa in the Roussillon France in 2003.

In the early 1990's he was working in the only winery in South Africa that was producing wines with indigenous yeasts and low yields. The resulting wines enhanced his interest, to the extent that he managed to nab a 3 month internship with the renowned Domaine Gauby in Calce France. Gerard Gauby and Tom became good friends and Gerard invited Tom back for 3 consecutive vintages as a cellar hand. It was during these 3 vintages that Tom met his wife (who is Gerard Gaubys sister). The rest as they say is history.
