Growing up in Fleurie, Yann Bertrand never considered a career in winemaking. After briefly studying commerce at a local university, he spent a few years traveling around the French Alps. When applying for jobs, he mentioned his father was a vigneron, which led to opportunities at wine bars and shops. Surrounded by passionate wine enthusiasts and artisan winemakers delivering their wines personally, he began to taste wines differently and question his path. Eventually, he realized that winemaking could be a fascinating career if he approached it with the same passion as the role models he encountered.
Upon returning to Beaujolais, Yann started learning from an extraordinary circle of producers he hadn't known before. This group included renowned figures such as Jean Foillard and Yvon Métras, as well as Jacques Neauport, the behind-the-scenes guru and quiet right-hand to the legendary Jules Chauvet.
The entire Domaine Les Bertrands consists of a 7.5-hectare vineyard, primarily in Fleurie with a small portion extending into Morgon. The vineyard is home to ancient vines, with the youngest being 30 years old and the oldest reaching 110 years. Since taking over the family domaine in 1992, his parents had gradually shifted towards organic viticulture, achieving full organic certification for the vineyard in 2013. Additionally, Yann began farming 1.5 hectares on his own using biodynamic principles and created two exceptional new cuvées in the neo-Beaujolais style of his renowned neighbours.
